The Future of Journalism

The Platform

Logistically speaking, the future of journalism relies on the internet. Online newspapers are immediately and easily accessible. For most Americans, it is more appealing to get information instantly than have to wait around for the newspaper to get to your door. When asked about this issue, Olivia Dulong, who is set to attend Suffolk University as a Journalism Major in the fall, agreed that Americans will lean towards online news providers. "I think that newspaper production will reduce and eventually be eliminated as a whole," said Dulong, "but not anytime soon." When it came to Televised News, Dulong stated that she doesn't think it "is going [away] anytime soon." Dulong claims that this shift towards digital news is due to the same reason "people tend to buy iBooks instead of a physical book for school." Dulong's reasoning is pretty sound. The instant satisfaction the internet can bring is extremely appealing to our current technology-based society. It would only make sense that news providers adjust to the demand for instant delivery.

The Ethics

Ethically speaking, journalists have been taking a beating, especially when it comes to politics. Watch the video down below to learn what I think needs to be improved regarding the ethics of journalism.

So, what's your role?

As the reader, your job is not only to read but to seek out the truth. There will always be biased sources and "fake news". It is your job to not instantly believe the first thing you hear. You must give thought to what you read and conduct, in a sense, your own investigation. What did MSNBC report? Did FOX report it differently? Why are these stories different? Are they told from different perspectives? Is there a middle ground. As a writer, I would love to tell you that all journalists share the same goal as me, to give you the truth, but that simply isn't true. Corporations and personal agendas can be major influences when it comes to any reporting. As a reader, you must stay aware of your surroundings and recognize your own internal bias. Doing this will help you understand the truth and make informed decisions.
